Turns out writing about Big Oil is more difficult than covering the CIA or the bin Ladens, according to journalist Steve Coll. Mr. Coll discussed his latest expose, “Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power” at Library HQ last night. Researching the book was beyond difficult–Coll noted that ExxonMobil deals with journalists “the same way a windshield deals with bugs.” His persistence paid off though, “Private Empire” reveals the shocking extent of Exxon’s power and deception, beginning with the Exxon Valdez accident in 1989 and leading to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. A timely read for anyone interested in the American’s growing energy concerns.
